Learning by building

When I decided to build my own website, I wasn’t trying to become a web developer. I wanted to create a place that felt like home. A place where my books, my thoughts, and conversations that matter could live together.

What I didn’t expect was how much I would learn along the way.

There were domains to connect, DNS records to understand, Cloudflare settings to navigate, search engines to verify, security settings to configure, and more than a few moments when the next step wasn’t obvious.

AI became an extraordinary resource throughout that process. It helped me understand unfamiliar concepts, ask better questions, and see connections I wouldn’t have seen on my own. But understanding isn’t something another person, or another tool, can simply hand you. At some point, you have to make sense of it yourself.

Somewhere in the middle of building a website, I realized I was building something else.

Confidence.

Not because everything went perfectly. Quite the opposite.

Because every obstacle I worked through became something I understood. Every answer I searched for became knowledge I could carry forward. I wasn’t collecting solutions. I was developing judgment.

Recognizing imperfection isn’t settling for less. It’s knowing that some things can only be learned by moving through them.

That sentence has become more than a thought to me. It’s become a way of approaching life.

Growth asks something of us. It asks us to be willing to look inexperienced for a while. To ask questions. To make mistakes. To keep showing up anyway.

Today my website is connected to the world.

But what I’m celebrating isn’t the technology.

It’s the quiet confidence that comes from staying with something long enough to understand it.

That’s a foundation worth building…
